Every ETP superintendent has heard the debate: switch from alum to PAC, or stay with what works? The answer is not universal — it depends on your raw water alkalinity, turbidity profile, sludge handling cost and discharge limits. This guide is written for Indian plant engineers and procurement teams who need a decision framework, not a sales pitch.

How PAC and Alum Work Differently
Aluminium sulphate (alum) lowers pH as it hydrolyses and releases aluminium species that neutralise colloidal charge. Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) is pre-hydrolysed — it works across a wider pH band and typically needs less alkalinity supplementation. In hard, high-alkalinity Gujarat borewell water, PAC often doses lower; in low-alkalinity surface water, alum may still be economical if lime or soda ash is already on site.
Sludge is the hidden cost. Alum frequently produces more hydrated sludge per unit of turbidity removed. PAC tends to form denser flocs, which can reduce centrifuge or filter-press cycles — a real saving when sludge disposal is charged per tonne.
When to Buy PAC
Choose PAC when: (1) your plant struggles with pH crash after coagulant dose, (2) sludge volume is choking your dewatering line, (3) you need faster response to variable inlet turbidity, or (4) you are sizing a compact clarifier with limited retention time. Powder PAC suits sites with storage space and stable demand; liquid PAC suits plants that want pump-and-dose simplicity.
Drashti Chemicals supplies both powder and liquid PAC from Vadodara with jar-test support and COA on every batch. Request a bulk quote with your raw water analysis — we can recommend a starting dose range before you commit to a tanker load.
When to Stay with Alum (or Ferric Alum)
Alum remains right when your plant has decades of jar-test data, alkalinity adjustment is cheap, and sludge is handled on-site without penalty. Ferric alum adds iron-based coagulation for colour-heavy textile effluent. Non-ferric alum is preferred where iron contamination is unacceptable — food-adjacent utilities and some pharma utility water systems.
If you are comparing alum vs PAC only on chemical kg rate, you will often choose wrong. Model chemical cost per m³ treated water including lime/soda ash correction and sludge disposal. Our team helps ETP buyers in Gujarat and Maharashtra run this comparison on real plant data.
Procurement Checklist
Before you RFQ: confirm grade (powder vs liquid, basicity for PAC), packaging (25/50 kg bags vs IBC), MSDS and COA requirements, and delivery lead time to your site. Specify whether you need compatibility with existing dosing pumps and whether monsoon humidity affects powder storage.
Drashti Chemicals stocks PAC, aluminium sulphate, ferric alum and non-ferric alum — so you can trial alternatives without switching suppliers. GST-compliant invoicing (24AGLPC6288M1ZX), pan-India dispatch and export documentation available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is PAC better than alum for ETP in Gujarat?
Often yes for high-turbidity or low-alkalinity effluent, but the right choice depends on jar-test results, sludge handling cost and pH correction. Many Gujarat ETPs run PAC; others stay on alum with lime dosing.
Can we run jar tests before buying bulk PAC?
Yes. Drashti Chemicals supports jar testing and dose recommendations. Share inlet water quality and we help you compare PAC vs alum on your actual stream.
Do you supply both powder and liquid PAC?
Yes — powder in 25/50 kg bags and liquid PAC for direct pump dosing. Bulk quote on request with COA and MSDS.
