Powder PAC contains 28–30% Al2O3 equivalent, requiring dissolution in water before dosing — typically 5–10% stock solution.

Liquid PAC contains 10–18% Al2O3 and is ready to dose directly from storage tanks via metering pumps.

Both forms have similar coagulation mechanisms; performance difference at equivalent Al2O3 dose is negligible in jar tests.

Liquid PAC has higher freight cost per unit Al2O3 due to water content; powder PAC is more concentrated for long-distance transport.

Operational Considerations

Liquid PAC suits plants with existing HDPE/FRP storage tanks and automated dosing pumps — minimal preparation labour.

Powder PAC suits plants with limited tank space, remote locations or where tanker delivery of liquid PAC is impractical.

Powder requires dissolution tank and agitator — factor in capital cost and daily preparation time (30–60 minutes for batch dissolution).

Liquid PAC degrades slowly over months; powder PAC has longer shelf life if stored dry but cakes if exposed to moisture.

Cost Analysis and Supplier Recommendations

Compare cost on Al2O3 basis, not per-kg price — liquid PAC appears cheaper per kg but contains 60–70% water.

Include dissolution labour, energy and equipment maintenance when calculating total cost of ownership for powder PAC.

For consumption above 500 kg/day Al2O3 equivalent, liquid PAC tanker delivery from a nearby supplier is usually most economical.
