Open recirculating cooling towers evaporate water, concentrate minerals, and breathe airborne debris — they need scale/corrosion inhibitor plus biocide rotation and often bio-dispersant support. The expensive mistake is copying a closed-loop nitrite program onto an open tower, or dosing open-tower hypochlorite into a closed loop with incompatible filming inhibitor. Drashti Chemicals supplies both families of SKU from Vadodara — tell us which loop you have before you order.
Open tower — evaporation, cycles, microbiology
Makeup water replaces evaporation; blowdown controls cycles of concentration. Scale inhibitor (or combined scale-corrosion product) runs continuously; biocide pulses on a schedule; bio-dispersant may precede heavy biocide slugs when fill is fouled.
RO make-up or softened make-up changes inhibitor demand — re-balance when pretreatment changes. RO antiscalant belongs on the membrane, not in the tower basin.
Closed loop — corrosion-first, low blowdown
Closed loops lose water mainly to leaks and maintenance drains — hardness buildup is slower but oxygen ingress and galvanic corrosion still matter. Programs may use nitrite, molybdate, or filming amine blends designed for closed systems — confirm compatibility with aluminium or copper in the loop.
Do not assume a scale-corrosion inhibitor labelled for open towers is approved for your closed loop metallurgy — read the COA application notes and your consultant’s sheet.
Cleaning and descaling — curative vs preventive
Preventive: daily inhibitor + biocide program. Curative: cooling water descaling chemical for offline or controlled online clean of carbonate or iron oxide — metallurgy-specific, not the same SKU as daily treatment.
After a heavy clean, re-establish inhibitor film before returning to full load — otherwise fresh metal corrodes faster than operators expect.

Often no — open and closed programs differ in biocide intensity and corrosion chemistry. Share both loop datasheets on RFQ so we do not substitute grades.
Do closed loops need biocide?
