Sulphamic Acid for Descaling vs HCl and Sulphuric: When Solid Acid Wins

Sulphamic acid descaling — lower fume solid acid vs hydrochloric and sulphuric, inhibitor packages, boiler and heat-exchanger RFQ tips.

Sulphamic acid (H₃NSO₃, CAS 5329-14-6) is the solid descaling acid many utility engineers pick when hydrochloric fumes are unacceptable in a cramped plant room but they still need mineral-acid strength on calcium and iron scale. It is not magically safe — it is still corrosive — but bagged solid is easier to transport and dose into inhibited circulation loops than fuming HCl.

Drashti Chemicals supplies sulphamic acid powder in 25–50 kg bags from Vadodara with COA on assay. Compare on the same RFQ with HCl, sulphuric, citric or oxalic when your metallurgy sheet allows options — we do not push one acid for every heat exchanger.

Sulphamic vs hydrochloric acid

HCl liquid pickling is cheap at scale and fast on many steel scales, but vapour corrodes nearby electricals and hurts operators in poorly vented bays. Sulphamic circulates as a dissolved solid (typically 5–10% w/w with inhibitors) with lower airborne acid mist when prepared correctly.

Effluent from sulphamic still needs neutralisation and consent — you are adding sulfate/amide breakdown products, not eliminating chemical treatment.

Sulphamic vs sulphuric acid

Sulphuric is stronger and cheaper per kg of acid strength for large offline cleans, but exothermic dilution and misting demand strict procedures. Sulphamic trades some raw strength for easier solid handling and predictable bag inventory in stores that already stock oxalic or citric.

For mixed metallurgy (copper, brass fittings in a steel shell), follow OEM inhibitor guidance — no acid replaces a metallurgy review.

Typical descaling programme shape

Circulate inhibited sulphamic solution at controlled temperature, monitor iron in sample, stop when iron plateaus, rinse and neutralise. Blindly extending acid time eats base metal after scale is gone.

Never add hypochlorite or chlorinated cleaners to spent sulphamic rinse without a written plan — chlorine/ammonia chemistry risks exist on poorly segregated floors.

Textile and dye-house uses

Beyond utilities, sulphamic adjusts bath pH where a solid acid is dosed incrementally. It is not a food acidulant — keep food and industrial POs separate on documentation.

Pair RFQ with sodium acetate or acetic when you need buffer systems, not only mineral descaling.

COA, packing and RFQ

Ask for assay on COA (high-purity technical grades are common), mesh if you pre-dissolve in bag feeders, and bag count per month. Store dry — caked sulphamic dissolves slower and jams ejectors.

WhatsApp duty (boiler, calandria, plate HX), volume, metallurgy and inhibitor brand if customer-supplied. We respond with documented bulk quote — no online ₹/kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sulphamic acid safer than hydrochloric acid?

Easier to handle as a solid with less fuming when dissolved properly — still corrosive. PPE, ventilation and inhibitor packages remain mandatory.

What concentration for boiler descaling?

Often 5–10% w/w with approved inhibitors — follow your boiler OEM or heat-exchanger vendor sheet, not a generic web recipe.

Sulphamic vs citric for CIP?

Food CIP often prefers citric for residue and regulatory familiarity; sulphamic is common in industrial utility descaling. State food vs utility on the RFQ.

Can you supply sulphamic with oxalic on one invoice?

Yes — both are acids-solvents SKUs from Vadodara. Separate line items and COAs per chemical.
