Phosphoric Acid vs Sulphuric Acid: Which Industrial Acid Fits Your Process?

Sulphuric acid (~98% commercial) is a strong diprotic acid — small volumes move pH hard and add sulfate anion to your circuit. Phosphoric acid at 85% is weaker and triprotic; it buffers more and releases phosphate species that can stay in treated water or on metal surfaces.

For ETP primary pH correction before coagulation, Gujarat plants usually reach for HCl or H₂SO₄ first because phosphate discharge limits bite quickly. Phosphoric belongs when phosphate precipitation, iron-phosphate pretreatment, or downstream nutrient is intentional — not as a drop-in because the drum was cheaper this month.

Iron-phosphate conversion coatings before painting often use 10–20% phosphoric dips (with accelerators per OEM sheet). Sulphuric is the workhorse for pickling carbon steel and acid cleaning where a phosphate film is not the goal — but fumes, chloride/sulfate effluent and metallurgy matter.

Phosphoric acid appears in sugar decolourisation and phosphoric fertilizer routes where P₂O₅ content is product, not waste. Sulphuric is non-substitutable in many sulfuric-acid contact processes and battery acid blending — phosphoric will not do that job.

When procurement compares quotes, insist both vendors state assay % and whether the lot is merchant-grade industrial or tighter food/pharma utility. Mismatch here is a common reason a tanker fails incoming QC.

Neutralising alkaline effluent with sulphuric produces sulfate-rich liquor — check CPCB/state consent for sulfate and TDS. Phosphoric neutralisation with lime yields calcium phosphate sludge; clarifier and press capacity must account for that volume.

Both acids ship in HDPE drums or bulk as quoted from Vadodara. Sulphuric demands strict dilution discipline (always acid into water). Phosphoric is somewhat easier on skin contact but is still corrosive — PPE and bunded storage apply.
