Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2) is available as 65–70% granules or tablets — stable solid form with long shelf life in dry storage.
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is supplied as 10–15% liquid solution — degrades over time, losing available chlorine especially above 30°C.
Both release hypochlorous acid (HOCl) as the active disinfectant; calcium hypochlorite also increases hardness in treated water.
Calcium hypochlorite is classified as oxidising solid (Class 5.1) for transport; sodium hypochlorite is corrosive liquid (Class 8).
Application Comparison
Sodium hypochlorite suits large municipal plants with bulk storage tanks, automated dosing and daily consumption that prevents degradation.
Calcium hypochlorite suits smaller plants, swimming pools, emergency disinfection and sites without bulk liquid chemical storage infrastructure.
Calcium hypochlorite tablets (TCCA alternative) are used in continuous pool chlorinators and remote water treatment installations.
Both are effective against bacteria, viruses and algae; calcium hypochlorite may leave slight calcium residue in hard water areas.
Safety, Storage and Procurement
Store calcium hypochlorite away from organic materials, acids and moisture — decomposition releases chlorine gas.
Store sodium hypochlorite in shaded HDPE tanks; vent tanks to prevent pressure build-up from decomposition.
Calculate dose on available chlorine basis — 1 kg of 65% HTH equals approximately 6.5 kg of 10% sodium hypochlorite.
