Polyelectrolyte Chemistry and Types

Polyelectrolytes are long-chain synthetic polymers with ionic groups — classified as anionic, cationic and non-ionic based on charge type.

Anionic polyelectrolytes (polyacrylamide-based) are most common in ETP applications for flocculating negatively charged particles after coagulation.

Cationic polyelectrolytes are used for sludge dewatering, oily wastewater treatment and positive-charge flocculation in specific applications.

Molecular weight (MW) ranges from low (5–10 million) to very high (15–20 million) — higher MW produces larger flocs but requires more careful dosing.

Dosing Best Practices and Supplier Selection

Always prepare 0.1–0.5% stock solution with soft water; hard water causes precipitation and reduces polymer effectiveness.

Age stock solution for 30–60 minutes before dosing to allow full polymer chain uncoiling — do not dose freshly mixed solution.

Over-dosing causes re-stabilisation of particles (floc reversal) — increase dose incrementally in jar tests to find optimal point.
