Sodium metabisulfite is a white to yellowish crystalline powder with a pungent SO2 odour, soluble in water forming sodium bisulfite solution.
It acts as a strong reducing agent, releasing sulfur dioxide (SO2) in acidic conditions — handle in ventilated areas with appropriate PPE.
Store in sealed containers away from moisture, oxidisers and acids; decomposition releases SO2 gas which is toxic and corrosive.

Dosing Guidelines and Supplier Considerations
Dechlorination dose is typically 2–2.5 mg SMB per 1 mg of residual chlorine; over-dosing adds BOD load to receiving water.
Dissolve in water before dosing; undissolved crystals can cause uneven dechlorination and localised corrosion in pipelines.
Monitor pH during dosing — SMB is most effective at pH 6–8; acidic conditions accelerate SO2 release and equipment corrosion.
