This guide covers practical points for plant operators and procurement teams evaluating chemical supply in India.

Why Antiscalants Are Critical for RO Performance

RO membranes reject dissolved salts but concentrate them on the membrane surface — without antiscalant, calcium carbonate and sulphate scales form rapidly.

Scaling reduces permeate flux, increases energy consumption and can permanently damage polyamide thin-film composite membranes.

Antiscalants work by threshold inhibition, crystal distortion and dispersion — preventing scale nucleation at sub-stoichiometric doses.

Silica scaling is particularly problematic in Gujarat and Rajasthan borewell water; specialised antiscalants are required above 120 mg/L SiO2.

Types of RO Antiscalants and Selection Criteria

Phosphonate-based antiscalants are effective for calcium carbonate and sulphate scales in municipal and industrial RO feed water.

Polymer-based antiscalants (polyacrylic acid) provide broad-spectrum scale control including silica and iron fouling.

High-SiO2 formulations are designed for geothermal, textile and pharmaceutical RO systems with silica-rich feed water.

Select antiscalant based on feed water analysis (LSI, S&DSI, silica saturation), recovery rate and membrane manufacturer compatibility.

Dosing, Monitoring and Best Practices

Typical dosing rate is 3–5 mg/L of antiscalant in feed water; use online dosing pumps with feed flow proportioning.

Monitor SDI (Silt Density Index) and normalised permeate flow weekly — declining trends indicate scaling or fouling onset.

Conduct quarterly membrane autopsy and scale analysis to validate antiscalant performance and adjust formulation if needed.

Source RO antiscalant from suppliers offering technical datasheets, compatibility certificates and bulk supply for multi-RO installations.
