MEG vs DEG: Mono Ethylene Glycol and Diethylene Glycol for Polyester and Process Buyers

Mono ethylene glycol (MEG) vs diethylene glycol (DEG) — polyester feedstock specs, hygroscopic storage, COA fields and wrong-glycol PO mistakes.

Supplying industrial chemicals from Vadodara since 2015 — ETP coagulants, RO programs, and process chemicals with batch COA/MSDS.

MEG vs DEG in one line: mono ethylene glycol (MEG) is the primary glycol monomer for PET/polyester and most antifreeze concentrate economics; diethylene glycol (DEG) is the heavier diglycol used in polyester polyols, brake fluid blends, dehydration and some resin formulations — not a cheaper drop-in for fibre-grade PTA esterification.

Founder-led industrial chemical supply from Vadodara — ETP coagulant selection, RO programs, textile and pharma utility chemicals. Batch COA/MSDS on every dispatch. GSTIN 24AGLPC6288M1ZX.

Drashti Chemicals quotes MEG and DEG from Vadodara with COA matched to the grade you name — fibre-oriented MEG needs tighter aldehyde/UV lines than industrial coolant MEG. We are a stockist; confirm CAS and product name on every PO so “ethylene glycol” generic descriptions do not ship the wrong drum.

Chemistry and end-use split

MEG (CAS 107-21-1) reacts with PTA or DMT in polyester chains. DEG (CAS 111-46-6) adds flexibility in polyols and appears in mixtures — using DEG where MEG is specified shifts molecular weight and can scrap a reactor batch.

Coolant blenders may use MEG with inhibitor packages sold separately — tell us if you need fibre MEG vs industrial coolant band on COA.

COA parameters polyester buyers watch

Fibre-grade MEG COAs often highlight purity, UV transmittance, aldehydes, water and colour. DEG quotes may emphasise purity and water for resin or dehydration duty.

If your last approved vendor COA is attached to the RFQ, we match against it — faster qualification than a generic “99% min” email.

Hygroscopic storage and drum integrity

Both glycols pick up water from air. Drum bungs and nitrogen blanketing (where your SOP requires) protect polyester feedstock MEG from moisture that shifts esterification.

Store indoors, inspect drums for dents and leaks before stacking. Glycol spills are slippery — containment matters as much as for acids.

MEG vs propylene glycol (PG)

PG is favoured where lower acute toxicity heat-transfer fluids are specified (some food-adjacent HVAC). MEG remains the polyester and classic antifreeze volume glycol.

Do not substitute PG for MEG on a PET RFQ — different CAS, different customer approval.

Logistics and RFQ checklist

RFQ: MEG or DEG explicitly, grade/fibre vs industrial, monthly MT or drum count, delivery site, and whether isotank contracts are in scope.

Drashti dispatches from Vadodara with GST invoice, COA and MSDS per lot. No published list prices — WhatsApp quantity for documented quote.

Catalog naming confusion

Some buyers search “ethylene glycol” while their spec says MEG. Some plants keep both MEG and DEG on site for different reactors — label stores clearly.

Our product pages separate mono ethylene glycol (MEG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) SKUs with distinct slugs — link your ERP to the correct href.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use DEG instead of MEG for polyester?

No for standard PET from PTA/DMT — MEG is the specified comonomer. DEG is a different product with different applications.

What is fibre-grade MEG?

MEG with tighter COA limits (e.g. aldehydes, UV) suited to polyester fibre and bottle-grade plants — quote it explicitly on the RFQ.

Are MEG and ethylene glycol the same?

MEG is mono ethylene glycol — the common name “ethylene glycol” in trade often means MEG, but always confirm CAS 107-21-1 vs DEG CAS 111-46-6 on the PO.

Do you supply glycols outside Gujarat?

Yes — pan-India road dispatch from Vadodara as quoted. Share drum vs bulk monthly volume for freight planning.
