This guide covers practical points for plant operators and procurement teams evaluating chemical supply in India.

UN-Certified Packaging Requirements

Hazardous chemicals must be packed in UN-certified drums (1A1 steel, 1H1 plastic), IBCs or bags with proper UN marking and performance certification.

UN packaging codes indicate material type, performance level and maximum gross mass — verify certification is current and from accredited testing lab.

Inner packaging (liner bags, bottles) required for certain chemical classes to prevent leakage and contamination during transport.

Package must survive drop test, stack test and hydraulic pressure test as per UN Manual of Tests and Criteria.

Labelling and Documentation Standards

GHS-compliant labels with hazard pictograms, signal words (Danger/Warning), hazard statements and precautionary statements.

Product label must include: chemical name, CAS number, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date, country of origin.

Shipping marks on outer packaging: consignee, destination port, gross/net weight, handling instructions (This Side Up, Keep Dry).

MSDS (SDS) must accompany every shipment in language acceptable to destination country (English universally accepted).

Packaging Options by Product Type

Powder chemicals: 25 kg HDPE bags with inner liner, 500 kg–1000 kg jumbo bags (FIBC) for bulk export.

Liquid chemicals: 250 kg HDPE drums, 1000 kg IBC tanks, flexitanks (16–24 MT) for containerised liquid export.

Solid granules/tablets: 25 kg and 50 kg drums with desiccant for moisture-sensitive products like TCCA and calcium hypochlorite.

Custom packaging available from established exporters — discuss requirements during quotation stage for cost optimisation.
