Industrial Applications of Caustic Soda Flakes
pH adjustment in ETP, boiler water treatment and process water neutralisation — most common application in Gujarat industrial belt.
Pulp and paper industry: pulping, bleaching and de-inking processes consume large volumes of caustic soda.
Textile industry: mercerisation of cotton fabric, scouring and dye bath pH control.
Soap and detergent manufacturing, alumina refining (Bayer process), biodiesel production and chemical synthesis.
Handling, Storage and Safety Precautions
Caustic soda flakes (99% NaOH) are highly corrosive — causes severe burns on skin and eye contact; use face shield, rubber gloves and apron.
Store in dry, airtight containers — caustic soda is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from air, forming concentrated lye.
Dissolve by adding caustic to water (never water to caustic) with continuous stirring in HDPE or rubber-lined vessels.
Emergency equipment: eye wash station, safety shower and spill containment kit with neutralising agent (citric acid or vinegar).
