Buying 'polyelectrolyte' without charge type is how plants end up with drums of polymer that do nothing in the belt press. Anionic flocculants suit inorganic-rich sludges and many mineral processing streams; cationic types dominate biological sludge dewatering. Here is a practical buyer guide.

Charge Type and Sludge Source

Biological sludge from activated sludge plants is typically negative in surface charge — cationic polyelectrolyte bridges particles for belt press and centrifuge. Primary chemical sludge high in metal hydroxides often responds to anionic polymer. Mixed ETP sludge may need jar-test on fresh samples — not last year's product code.

Make-Down and Dosing

Emulsion polymers must be diluted and aged correctly; dry powder needs proper wetting to avoid fisheyes. Under-mixed polymer wastes money; over-dosing can release water back from cake. Specify emulsion vs powder, molecular weight range and recommended make-down equipment with your RFQ.

Drashti supplies cationic DWP-grade and anionic de-oiling polyelectrolytes with application notes for Gujarat ETPs and paper mills.

Procurement Tips

Trial one drum on live sludge before annual contract. Compare cost per dry tonne of cake produced, not cost per kg polymer. Store away from heat and frost; check shelf life on COA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use cationic polyelectrolyte for all ETP sludge?

Not always. Primary chemical sludge and certain oily streams often need anionic or blended programs. Jar-test before bulk purchase.

What molecular weight should I specify?

Depends on dewatering equipment and sludge type. Share belt press or centrifuge details with your supplier for a recommended grade.
